Explicit ten-sample reconstruction

Nine specified icosahedral measurements and one additional boundary value determine a ten-dimensional field.

This note completes the reconstruction already specified for F=H≤2⊕RJ\mathcal F=\mathcal H_{\le 2}\oplus\mathbb R J, J(x,y,z)=z(x2+xy−y2)J(x,y,z)=z(x^2+xy-y^2), dim⁡F=10\dim\mathcal F=10. It is a supplement to the boundary-reconstruction note. It is not an additional source paper. The sample labels below are coordinate-defined. They are not the browser tool’s numeric node order. The authoritative text is Ten_Sample_Reconstruction.md (9973 bytes). The sections on this page render that note. The operator callout is labeled separately and is not inside the file.

Ten points

Let φ=(1+5)/2\varphi=(1+\sqrt5)/2, φ′=1−φ\varphi'=1-\varphi, r=1+φ2r=\sqrt{1+\varphi^2}, and r−=1+(φ′)2r_-=\sqrt{1+(\varphi')^2}. The orthogonal alignment is

R=(1/rφ/r01/r−φ′/r−0001).R=\begin{pmatrix}1/r&\varphi/r&0\\1/r_-&\varphi'/r_-&0\\0&0&1\end{pmatrix}.

Write ξ=Rx\xi=Rx and f^(ξ)=f(RTξ)\widehat f(\xi)=f(R^{\mathsf T}\xi). Then RRT=IRR^{\mathsf T}=I and J(x)=5 XYZJ(x)=\sqrt5\,XYZ. A claim that det⁡R=1\det R=1 is not needed.

The six unit axes in aligned coordinates are a1=r−1(0,1,φ)a_1=r^{-1}(0,1,\varphi), a2=r−1(1,φ,0)a_2=r^{-1}(1,\varphi,0), a3=r−1(φ,0,1)a_3=r^{-1}(\varphi,0,1), a4=r−1(0,1,−φ)a_4=r^{-1}(0,1,-\varphi), a5=r−1(1,−φ,0)a_5=r^{-1}(1,-\varphi,0), a6=r−1(φ,0,−1)a_6=r^{-1}(\varphi,0,-1). They satisfy ∣aj∣=1|a_j|=1 and (ai⋅aj)2=1/5(a_i\cdot a_j)^2=1/5 for i≠ji\neq j.

The nine icosahedral samples are at a1,−a1,a2,−a2,a3,−a3,a4,a5,a6a_1,-a_1,a_2,-a_2,a_3,-a_3,a_4,a_5,a_6. The tenth is at ξ∗=(1,1,1)/3\xi_*=(1,1,1)/\sqrt3. Physical points are p=RTξp=R^{\mathsf T}\xi. All ten lie on the unit sphere. Record the values in the fixed order v1,+,v1,−,v2,+,v2,−,v3,+,v3,−,v4,v5,v6,v∗v_{1,+},v_{1,-},v_{2,+},v_{2,-},v_{3,+},v_{3,-},v_4,v_5,v_6,v_*. At the first nine points, XYZ=0XYZ=0. At the extra point, J(p∗)=5/(33)≠0J(p_*)=\sqrt5/(3\sqrt3)\neq 0.

Linear part

Every u∈H≤2u\in\mathcal H_{\le 2} decomposes as u^(ξ)=e(ξ)+ℓ⋅ξ\widehat u(\xi)=e(\xi)+\ell\cdot\xi, with ee even and harmonic of degree at most two. The cubic contributes zero at every icosahedral sample. The paired differences dj=(vj,+−vj,−)/2d_j=(v_{j,+}-v_{j,-})/2 for j=1,2,3j=1,2,3 satisfy dj=ℓ⋅ajd_j=\ell\cdot a_j. With

B=1r(01φ1φ0φ01),det⁡B=−2φ2r3≠0,B=\frac1r\begin{pmatrix}0&1&\varphi\\1&\varphi&0\\\varphi&0&1\end{pmatrix},\qquad \det B=-\frac{2\varphi^2}{r^3}\neq 0,

the inverse is explicit:

ℓ=r2φ2(−φ1φ21φ2−φφ2−φ1)(d1d2d3).(1)\ell=\frac{r}{2\varphi^2}\begin{pmatrix}-\varphi&1&\varphi^2\\1&\varphi^2&-\varphi\\\varphi^2&-\varphi&1\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}d_1\\d_2\\d_3\end{pmatrix}.\tag{1}

Even part

Set mj=(vj,++vj,−)/2m_j=(v_{j,+}+v_{j,-})/2 for the three complete pairs, and mj=vj−ℓ⋅ajm_j=v_j-\ell\cdot a_j for the three singles. Then mj=e(aj)m_j=e(a_j). The even cardinals

Ej(ξ)=16+54((ξ⋅aj)2−∣ξ∣23)(2)E_j(\xi)=\frac16+\frac54\left((\xi\cdot a_j)^2-\frac{|\xi|^2}{3}\right)\tag{2}

are harmonic and satisfy Ej(±ai)=δijE_j(\pm a_i)=\delta_{ij}. They form a basis of the six-dimensional even space, so

U(ξ)=ℓ⋅ξ+∑j=16mjEj(ξ)=u^(ξ).(3)U(\xi)=\ell\cdot\xi+\sum_{j=1}^6 m_j E_j(\xi)=\widehat u(\xi).\tag{3}

Equivalently, c0=(1/6)∑mjc_0=(1/6)\sum m_j and C=(5/4)∑mj(ajajT−I/3)C=(5/4)\sum m_j(a_ja_j^{\mathsf T}-I/3), with tr⁡C=0\operatorname{tr}C=0.

Cubic and the complete field

The extra sample gives v∗=U(ξ∗)+β5/(33)v_*=U(\xi_*)+\beta\sqrt5/(3\sqrt3), hence

β=335(v∗−U(ξ∗)),(4)\beta=\frac{3\sqrt3}{\sqrt5}\bigl(v_*-U(\xi_*)\bigr),\tag{4}f^(ξ)=U(ξ)+33 XYZ(v∗−U(ξ∗)).(5)\widehat f(\xi)=U(\xi)+3\sqrt3\,XYZ\bigl(v_*-U(\xi_*)\bigr).\tag{5}

In physical coordinates,

f(x)=U(Rx)+J(x)J(p∗)(v∗−U(ξ∗)).(6)f(x)=U(Rx)+\frac{J(x)}{J(p_*)}\bigl(v_*-U(\xi_*)\bigr).\tag{6}

The extra-point values simplify to Ej(ξ∗)=φ/3E_j(\xi_*)=\varphi/3 for j=1,2,3j=1,2,3 and φ′/3\varphi'/3 for j=4,5,6j=4,5,6, so

U(ξ∗)=ℓX+ℓY+ℓZ3+φ3(m1+m2+m3)+φ′3(m4+m5+m6).(7)U(\xi_*)=\frac{\ell_X+\ell_Y+\ell_Z}{\sqrt3}+\frac{\varphi}{3}(m_1+m_2+m_3)+\frac{\varphi'}{3}(m_4+m_5+m_6).\tag{7}

Cardinal reconstruction

Put w(ξ)=ξ−∑k=46akEk(ξ)w(\xi)=\xi-\sum_{k=4}^6 a_k E_k(\xi) and t(ξ)=B−Tw(ξ)t(\xi)=B^{-\mathsf T}w(\xi). The nine quadratic cardinals are Lj,±=(Ej±tj)/2L_{j,\pm}=(E_j\pm t_j)/2 for j=1,2,3j=1,2,3 and Lk=EkL_k=E_k for k=4,5,6k=4,5,6. Then U=∑i∈IviLiU=\sum_{i\in\mathcal I} v_i L_i. With C∗(ξ)=33 XYZC_*(\xi)=3\sqrt3\,XYZ, W∗=C∗W_*=C_*, and Wi=Li−Li(ξ∗)C∗W_i=L_i-L_i(\xi_*)C_*,

f^(ξ)=∑i∈IviWi(ξ)+v∗W∗(ξ).(8)\widehat f(\xi)=\sum_{i\in\mathcal I} v_i W_i(\xi)+v_* W_*(\xi).\tag{8}

These ten functions lie in F\mathcal F and satisfy Wi(ξj)=δijW_i(\xi_j)=\delta_{ij} at the ten sample points, including the additional point.

Measurement, decoding, and transport

This callout is an explanatory supplement. It is not part of the hosted Markdown file. Let p1,…,p10p_1,\ldots,p_{10} be the ordered physical sample points, and let Wi(x)=Wi(Rx)\mathcal W_i(x)=W_i(Rx) be the physical-coordinate cardinal functions.

Sf=(f(p1),…,f(p10)),Dv=∑i=110viWi.Sf=\bigl(f(p_1),\ldots,f(p_{10})\bigr),\qquad Dv=\sum_{i=1}^{10} v_i\mathcal W_i.D=S−1,SD=IR10,DS=IF.D=S^{-1},\qquad SD=I_{\mathbb R^{10}},\qquad DS=I_{\mathcal F}.

The cardinal formula is the decoder S−1S^{-1}. For the invariant matrix AA in the transport section, set FA={f∘A−1:f∈F}\mathcal F_A=\{f\circ A^{-1}:f\in\mathcal F\} and UAf=f∘A−1U_A f=f\circ A^{-1}. Let SAS_A evaluate FA\mathcal F_A at Ap1,…,Ap10Ap_1,\ldots,Ap_{10}. Then

SAUA=S,DA=SA−1=UAS−1.S_A U_A=S,\qquad D_A=S_A^{-1}=U_A S^{-1}.

Here DAD_A is the decoding operator. The elliptic diffusion matrix, when displayed, is AATAA^{\mathsf T}, not DD.

Minimality and consistency

The derivation is constructive: paired differences determine ℓ\ell, the six even values determine ee, and the additional sample determines β\beta. The ten cardinal functions prove that the evaluation map is an isomorphism onto R10\mathbb R^{10}.

The space has dimension 10. Any collection of fewer than ten scalar point evaluations has a nonzero kernel, so ten is minimal for scalar point sampling on this space. Every vector of ten real readings produces exactly one field in the model. These ten readings contain no surplus linear consistency equation.

The existing thirteen-sample arrangement has rank ten and therefore three independent linear consistency equations. It can detect sample vectors that violate those equations. That is not an error-correction guarantee.

Transport to the ellipsoid

Let g(y)=f(A−1y)g(y)=f(A^{-1}y) with

A=(0τ0ττ000−τ−2),τ>0.A=\begin{pmatrix}0&\tau&0\\\tau&\tau&0\\0&0&-\tau^{-2}\end{pmatrix},\qquad \tau>0.

The physical points qi=Apiq_i=Ap_i, including q∗=Ap∗q_*=Ap_*, lie on the boundary of AB3AB^3 and retain the values g(qi)=vig(q_i)=v_i. Because J(Ax)=J(x)J(Ax)=J(x),

g(y)=U(RA−1y)+J(y)J(q∗)(v∗−U(ξ∗)),J(q∗)=533.(9)g(y)=U(RA^{-1}y)+\frac{J(y)}{J(q_*)}\bigl(v_*-U(\xi_*)\bigr),\qquad J(q_*)=\frac{\sqrt5}{3\sqrt3}.\tag{9}

The quadratic part lies in the transported space HA\mathcal H_A, with operator ∇⋅(AAT∇)\nabla\cdot(AA^{\mathsf T}\nabla). The complete field lies in HA⊕RJ\mathcal H_A\oplus\mathbb R J. Composition with the invertible map preserves the evaluation ranks and the ten-sample minimality result. The general transport statement is the written argument. The checker’s two rational executions, τ=1/2\tau=1/2 and τ=2/3\tau=2/3, are finite supporting checks.

Worked example

For f=2+3x+x2−y2+4Jf=2+3x+x^2-y^2+4J at x0=(1/5,−3/10,1/3)x_0=(1/5,-3/10,1/3),

β=4,J(x0)=−11/300,u(x0)=51/20,f(x0)=721/300.\beta=4,\qquad J(x_0)=-11/300,\qquad u(x_0)=51/20,\qquad f(x_0)=721/300.

The boundary-field tool still uses its twelve- and thirteen-sample calculation. This page does not add a ten-sample mode to that tool.

The two supplied transcripts are byte-identical. Their normal and optimized names record provenance, not different stdout. The author record names Python 3.12.14. This archive replayed the same checker with Python 3.10.21 at 2026-09-23T23:53:35Z. Both processes exited 0, stderr was empty, and both stdout files match a6e04971faf30e665f00fc1b60a16488dddce315a83d715291b5298031268be0.

Fresh evidence, kept separate from the supplied transcripts: execution.json, normal.stdout.txt, optimized.stdout.txt.

Commands: python3 verify_ten_sample.py and python3 -O verify_ten_sample.py. Standard library only. The thirteen groups include all 100 cardinal identities, all ten polynomial reconstructions, agreement of the staged and closed decoders, the alignment, the worked example, and the two finite transport checks.

What this is not

Not an additional counted source paper. Not peer review. Not independent third-party reproduction. Not arbitrary cubic or quintic reconstruction. Not a new positive cubature rule. Not an enlargement of Paper VI, Paper VII, or paper 8. Frozen G₆ is unchanged. Two rational transport executions do not prove the identity for every τ>0\tau>0; that statement is the written argument.
